Inventory first, rank second
List each current balance, APR, minimum payment, due date, and whether the rate can change. Note promotional-rate expiration dates and account status. Before directing extra money to ordinary unsecured balances, account for essentials, required payments, and debts with urgent consequences. A general payoff ranking doesn't replace advice about secured debts, taxes, support obligations, or legal deadlines.
Two common approaches
Highest interest first: Keep required payments on the included debts and direct available extra money to the highest-rate balance. This emphasizes interest cost. Smallest balance first: Keep required payments on the included debts and direct extra money to the smallest balance. This emphasizes closing one account balance sooner. When a target is paid off, redirect the money you were already committing toward the remaining debts, provided your budget still supports it.
| Illustrative account | Balance | APR | Interest-first order | Smallest-balance order |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | $800 | 12% | 3 | 1 |
| B | $2,400 | 28% | 1 | 2 |
| C | $4,000 | 18% | 2 | 3 |
These orders illustrate the difference, not a personalized recommendation. The monthly budget, required payments, fees, and changing rates affect the actual result. Neither strategy requires opening another credit account.
Do not confuse motivation with a guarantee
A faster first payoff may feel encouraging. Lower interest cost may be more important to another reader. The useful choice is one you understand and can maintain without missing other commitments. Revisit the plan when a rate changes, income falls, or an urgent expense appears. A debt-free date assumes future payments happen as modeled; it isn't a promise.
What to do with an unexpected $200
First confirm whether it's needed for an upcoming bill, reserve, or overdue obligation. If it's truly available for the plan, direct it according to the strategy you selected and verify how the creditor applies extra payments. For some loans, you may need specific principal-payment instructions. Check for applicable prepayment terms.
Your workbook task
- Complete the debt inventory.
- Identify one sustainable extra-payment amount.
- Write down which ranking you chose and why.
- Set a review date rather than repeatedly changing direction.
- Confirm payments posted and update balances from actual statements.
