FREE DIY DISPUTE COMPANION

Your facts.
Your words. Your next step.

Learn the process, choose a sample letter and prepare a prompt for an AI writing tool. You can dispute credit-report errors yourself without buying this organizer or a monthly service.

Start here: six practical steps.

  1. Get the report. Use AnnualCreditReport.com. Check which reporting company shows the item.
  2. Name the mismatch. Write down what the report says, what your records say and why you believe they conflict. Compare dates before assuming an error.
  3. Gather your records. Keep relevant statements, receipts and notices. Work with copies; keep your originals.
  4. Draft and review. Choose a sample below. Use your own truthful facts, and leave unknown details as placeholders.
  5. Submit it yourself. Follow the verified recipient’s current instructions. Keep the final letter, attachments and submission or delivery record.
  6. Track the response. Record receipt dates and read requests and results promptly. Compare any updated report with the result.

No purchase is needed to submit a dispute. A negative entry is not necessarily an error. Accurate information is not removed just because it is unfavorable.

Balance or account status seems wrong

Compare the report update date with payment and statement dates first. A payment made after the reporting date may explain the difference. Payment alone does not require removal of an accurate account.

LOCAL DRAFTING WORKSPACE

Turn a clear explanation into a useful draft.

This page assembles a sample letter or an AI prompt in your browser. It does not run AI or send your entries to an AI provider. Copy the prompt into an AI tool you choose, then check its answer.

Keep it anonymous here and in AI. Use [MY NAME], [MY ADDRESS] and [ACCOUNT] placeholders. Don’t paste reports, identification documents, Social Security numbers, birth dates, full account numbers, passwords or sensitive attachments. Add required identifiers privately to your final letter only.

Entries aren’t saved by this workspace. Reloading clears them; downloaded or copied text remains under your control. Other browser features may keep form history. No dispute is submitted and no reminder is sent.

Before you send anything.

  • Confirm that the recipient, report dates, account detail and requested correction are right.
  • Remove every unused placeholder. Add only the identifiers required by the verified recipient.
  • Check every sentence against your records. Delete invented facts, legal citations, threats and promises an AI tool may add.
  • Attach relevant copies and keep your own complete submission record. For mail, consider a trackable method with proof of receipt.
  • Don’t claim identity theft unless that is what happened. For suspected identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov.

Investigation timing depends on the process and circumstances. Use current official guidance and any notices you receive; this companion doesn’t calculate legal deadlines. A court summons, legal deadline or unresolved harm is a reason to seek qualified legal help.
